In the north of Portugal there are still a handful of metre-gauge railways. On these most attractive routes steam trains could be seen up until the mid-eighties. It is not only the steam locomotives which have disappeared. Most of the railway tracks have been shortened or have fallen into disuse. Several locomotives travelled abroad and are now in use as display trains.
